Is your company looking to upgrade bulk bag handling equipment in the near future? If so, you’re not alone.
According to survey results from our 2024 State of Bulk Bag Handling report, 77% percent of production managers, engineers and executive managers in the food, chemical and consumer products industries are planning on doing the same within the next two years.
The biggest driver behind the need to update their equipment? Growth.
An overwhelming 98% of industry professionals reported an upturn over the past year, with 52% experiencing growth rates exceeding 11%. To meet demand, companies will need to scale their operations appropriately by adding or upgrading bulk bag fillers, dischargers and related conveying equipment.
By updating their bulk bag handling equipment and systems, companies are looking to enhance the following:
1. Productivity Improvements – 59%
Upgrading to more advanced equipment can help companies increase the number of bags filled per hour, fit more product inside existing bags or transition to smaller bag sizes. These can all have a positive impact on a company’s bottom line.
In addition, the integration of advanced weighing and control systems can improve accuracy and streamline operations, leading to faster processing times and enhanced overall productivity.
2. Enhanced Safety Features – 44%
Adding more advanced bulk bag equipment can help prevent worker injuries. Equipment can also be designed to minimize the risk of exposing operators to potentially harmful substances, such as dust, from escaping into the environment.
3. Improved Efficiency – 44%
Modernizing your bulk bag equipment can help you put more weight into a bulk bag. If your material’s bulk density is below 30 lb/ft3, you can fit more weight into a trailer or sea can and reduce the costs required to move the same amount of product by a significant amount. This also reduces the number of bulk bags that you would have needed to fill for additional cost savings.
4. Minimized Downtime – 42%
Newer equipment can make performing preventative maintenance tasks more of a breeze. With designs that make it easier and faster to repair or replace parts, you can increase the lifespan of your equipment while keeping downtime to a minimum.
5. Ergonomic Improvements -31%
Some bulk bag equipment, like bulk bag dischargers, can leave a lot to be desired when it comes to comfort and ease of use for operators. Newer systems should be designed to limit bending, stretching, and manual handling, and make it easier and safer to untie bulk bag outlet spouts.
Changing capacity or material requirements (29%) and reduced shipping costs (24%) were two additional areas with room for improvement that professionals cited in the report.
